EBATINCA Drives Innovation in Sustainable Tourism with a New Data Platform

As part of the STARS 2023 call and within the project ‘Intelligent System for Sustainable Tourism based on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence,’ Ebatinca has completed the first iteration of our platform for capturing, processing, and generating knowledge focused on energy consumption and its related emissions. This innovative project marks a significant step forward in integrating data science and artificial intelligence solutions into sustainable tourism management.

The main objective of the system is to address the environmental challenges associated with tourism, a sector of high impact and interest in the Canary Islands. The platform, running on Azure’s cloud infrastructure and leveraging advanced tools like Databricks for data processing and Prophet for forecasting, is designed to handle and analyze large volumes of data in real time. This includes energy consumption data, CO2 emissions, and meteorological variables collected through public APIs.

The first iteration of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is now available, marking a significant milestone in the project. This system not only enhances our ability to manage tourism-related data and information but also establishes a strong foundation for future expansions and improvements. The MVP consists of a data acquisition platform, daily processing capabilities, and an advanced visualization layer.

The visible outcome of this effort is an interactive dashboard, shown below. This control panel allows users to visualize historical emissions, energy consumption forecasts, and an hourly classification that highlights the most and least polluting time slots throughout the day. This visual tool is valuable for identifying patterns and making informed decisions to reduce a company’s potential carbon footprint.
